OF BUILDING
CONCERN
For the most part, the best action to take
against the continuing production of wax in
the ear (cerumen) is no action at all. The
chemically complex mixture of fats and wax-
es serves as a chemical barrier against in-
fection in the ear canal. Cerumen also
provides a mechanical barrier that protects
and lubricates the skin, as well as prevents
water and other foreign matter from con-
tacting the tympanic membrane. Ordinari-
ly, ear wax migrates out the ear canal and is
shed naturally. However, those who wear
hearing instruments are advised not to take
such a passive approach concerning ceru-
men buildup on their instruments. They
should avail themselves of any number of
wax control devices that help avert buildup
which may compromise instrument perfor-
mance.

22 Detroit News startled
some supporters of the
Michigan Lubavitch Foun- (
dation.
The News article indicated the
1,200-family St. Thomas
Chaldean Catholic Church had
been approved by West Bloom-
field Township on a site adjacent
to the Jewish Community Cen-
ter.
The new church will actually
be a neighbor of the Synagogue
Campus for Living Judaism,
planned by Lubavitch on 40.5
acres west of the Jewish Com-
munity Campus. The church con-
gregation purchased the day-care
center on Maple Road next to the
Lubavitch property.
"We're going right ahead with
our project," said Rabbi Yitzchok
Kagan of the Lubavitch Founda-
tion.
The Synagogue Campus of
Living Judaism is expected to in-
clude a rabbinical school, student
residences, synagogue, mikvah,

spring.

museum, library and other facil-
ities. The rabbi said plans for the
first three buildings have been
submitted to West Bloomfield
Township's woodlands and wet-
lands boards.
The proposed buildings are a
$2 million synagogue, a $300,000
Daniel Sobel Friendship (coun-
seling) Center and a $1 million
library.
"I know I've said this for sev-
eral years," Rabbi Kagan said,
"but we are hoping to break
ground in the fall and begin con-
struction next spring."
The rabbi said bank financing
has delayed the project. "The
banks want more collateral, more
secured pledges."
But Lubavitch is moving
ahead with its plans, and is mov-
ing Rabbi and Mrs. Levi Shem-
tov from New York to West
Bloomfield in the next few
months to begin planning the So-
bel Friendship Center's pro-
grams.
Rabbi Shemtov is the nephew
of Rabbi Berel Shemtov, director
of the Michigan Lubavitch. r

Two Jews founded the CBS
and NBC television net-
works — William Paley and
David Sarnoffrespectively.
