LET'S IMPROVE THE COURT WITH FRESH IDEAS ELECT TRAILS page 118 JOSEPH SHULMAN AS YOUR NEW OAKLAND COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE PUT 42 YEARS OF TRIAL EXPERIENCE TO WORK FOR YOU! What Do You Do For Fun In The Summer? Har-dee-har-har As a member of the Second City National Touring Company, Jon Glaser gets the last laugh. HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF: SHAAREY ZEDEK SINCE I 969 PERFECTION-MOSAIC LODGE SINCE I MOSLEM TEMPLE SINCE 1 DETROIT YACHT CLUB SINCE 954 954 I 952 B'NAI BRiTH BARRISTERS KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS SINCE UNITED HEBREW SCHOOL PAST CHANCELLOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS TAU EPSILONS RHO LEGAL SOCIETY ALLIED JEWISH CAMPAIGN WORKER PAST CHANCELLOR DETROIT JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER I 974 FORMER BOATING CHAIRMAN FORMER ATTORNEY FOR COVENANT GRAD CHAPTER CREDIT UNION CUB MASTER E Shana Vinegar, 25, Huntington Woods "I like to take long walks by the water, go horseback riding, go out on a frierid's boat, read really long books and go up North." Howard Rosner, 25, Southfield "I've been playing a lot of basketball and traveling. Summer is the best time to see concerts and movies." Jay Bressler, 28, Farmington Hills "Besides getting married next week, I like lying in the sun, playing tennis, going out and having fun." very now and then, Jon Glaser gets a "Wow, Pm on the same stage" flash. Last month, the 26-year- old actor began working six days a week on the main stage of the Second City in Chicago. His per- formances grace the same stage that those of comic icons Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Jim Belushi and Martin Short once did. "Having the opportunity to be a working actor is something I'm thankful for," Mr. Glaser said. "This is a great chance for me to do my own work. It is so re- warding to see an audience en- joy what you are doing." Mr. Glaser, formerly of Farm- ington Hills, began his latest stint as an understudy for one of the actors who left Second City last month to work for HBO. Mr. Glaser will perform until the cur- rent show, Are You Now, or Have You Ever Been Mellow, is fin- ished. After that, he will remain with the Second City but not on its main stage. He has not been given a final show date. As for what's next, it will be something with Second City — but he does not know where. Mr. Glaser equates the Second City hierarchy in the Chicago area to professional baseball, re- ferring to where he is now as the major leagues. The touring com- pany he began with almost two years ago he calls the minors. The other two Second City the- aters there are higher up in the minor league system. "The best-case scenario is I could move up, maybe to a the- ater in the (Chicago) suburbs," he said. As a member of one of three Second City national touring companies, Mr. Glaser traveled around the country. Right now, a typical perfor- mance for Mr. Glaser includes acting in a series of skits written by him and the six other per- formers. Improvisation, where audience members give per- formers words to incorporate into an unscripted scene, follow the skits. "People have different notions about improvisation," he said. "It is not about jokes, it's about cre- ating a scene." Mr. Glaser said his passion for acting dates back to his child- hood. "I always wanted to be like Robin Williams," he said. CONSIDERED OUTSTANDING BY WIFE BAYLEE SHULMAN AND Jon Glaser: Performing at Second City. In college, Mr. Glaser attend- ed the University of Michigan, where he was involved with Just Kidding, a U-M comedy club. Af- ter graduation, the group took its show on the road, performing at colleges around the country. In 1991, Mr. Glaser was the first runner-up in the Certs/U.S. Concepts College Comedy Com- petition.. During the finals, he ap- peared on stage before Jerry Seinfeld. In the future, Mr. Glaser "plans to be a successful actor." He has been in commercials, but not on television or in the movies. He would enjoy doing either one, although his favorite is theater. "I love theater," he said. ❑ MELVIN AND CAROL KAFTAN IRVING AND BARBARA NUSSBAUM DR.
