Boeing was the manufacturer of the plane. Some 1,300 claims were filed in connection with the crash, which occurred shortly after take- off and claimed the lives of 47 people. The amounts of the awards were not made public, according to the terms of the settlements. But reports here said claimants received at least $10,000, and in some cases substantially more. Most of the claimants living in the apartment complex were re- cent Third World immigrants. In February, an inquiry launched by the Netherlands Avi- ation Safety Board found that faulty engine mountings were re- sponsible for the disaster. Continuity For British Jews London (JTA) — British Jewish leaders are hailing the most rad- ical development in community fund-raising here in recent decades — an agreement by the Joint Israel Appeal to raise mon- ey for Jewish continuity. The JIA, British Jewry's most powerful fund-raising group, un- derwrote its new involvement in domestic causes by pledging the equivalent of $7.8 million over the next three years to an edu- cational body named Jewish Con- tinuity, which was founded last year by Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. Together, the JIA and Jewish Continuity will also develop and expand programs for British Jew- ish youth in Israel. "You can't look at the national priorities of the Jewish people to- day without recognizing that Jewish continuity in the Diaspo- ra is a major element," said the JIA president, Sir Trevor Chinn. `The Jewish people have hope- fully concluded their war against the Arabs," said Sir Chinn. 'Now we can all unite in the battle against assimilation." The JIA's move coincides with a worldwide shift in fund-raising efforts toward greater involve- ment in education and culture in the Diaspora. The JIA will run. a "two-line" campaign which will enable donors to earmark separate con- tributions to Israel and Jewish Continuity. Funds will be raised in separate British regions to fund projects in those regions.
