Gerald and Barbara Cook greet olim at Ben-Gurion Airport.

Teitel Trust Sponsors
Yet Another Planeload

RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER

erald Cook's great-grand-
mother was kicked out of
Russia for selling liquor by
the glass without a license.
And it's a good thing for him
that she was.
Were it not for his family's ex-
ile in 1899, Mr. Cook and his wife,
Barbara, might never have got-
ten the chance to sponsor air-
plane flights for hundreds of
Ukrainian Jews immigrating to
Israel.
On July 5, 1994, Mr. Cook —
an attorney and administrator of
the Detroit-based Teitel Trust —

traveled to Ben-Gurion Airport
in Israel to greet 150 olim as they
stepped off the plane from the for-
mer Soviet Union.
Mr. Cook's uncle, Ben Teitel,
was a wealthy owner of apart-
ments throughout Michigan and
established a family trust before
he died in 1985.
The Teitel Trust has sponsored
two flights of Russian ohm
through the United Jewish Ap-
peal's Operation Exodus cam-
paign. The first planeful of 190
emigres came over in 1990. This
past June, another 150 arrived
at a cost of $1,000 per person.
Mr. Cook said the flights are
important to him because he
knows they would have held val-
ue to his Uncle Ben who was a
generous supporter of Israel and
local Jewish causes.
"The point is, all the Jews in
the world are related. All people

in the world are related, but as
Jews, we're really part of the
same family," Mr. Cook said.
On the day of the scheduled
flight, Mr. and Mrs. Cook arrived
at Ben-Gurion Airport at 3 a.m.
Back in America, it was still the
Fourth Of July.
"That meant nothing to the
ohm and nothing to the Israelis,
but it meant a lot to me," Mr.
Cook said.
As the travel-weary passen-
gers stepped off the plane, the
Cooks greeted them and helped
with their luggage. A translator
explained the Teitel Trust and
the concept of tzedakah.
"I wanted them to understand
that it's Jewish philanthropy that
paid for this flight and all other
flights that come out of the for-
mer Soviet Union," he said.
"Some day, they might be
the ones in a position to help
others." ❑
