loved it. They're begging for an
ecore. I'm planning- to give up air-
plane food and tote a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich.
During their four weeks of
anticipation, my children also
catalogued everything they
wanted to bring along, and then
wheedled incessantly for its
inclusion. I spent a week ex-
plaining why the cocker spaniel
couldn't come; four days demon-
strating why I couldn't bring the
Complete Little Homemaker
Handy Kitchen set (with stove,
fridge, dishes, pans, microwave
and sink), and the rest of the
time assuring them that essen-
tials — from silverware to sand
— would be provided at our des-
tination.
Next year, I'll know better.
look around the table at Hav-
dalah one Saturday night and an-
nounce, "Go upstairs and gather
your belongings. We leave for
Honolulu in the morning."
I'll still have to tell them the
dog can't come, but at least they
won't have already packed his
suitcase. ❑

French Premier
Visits Auschwitz

Paris (JTA) — During a trip to
Poland last week, French Prime
Minister Edouard Balladur vis-
ited the site of the Auschwitz con-
centration camp.
Mr. Balladur refrained from
making any public statement
during his visit. But when he vis-
ited the museum on the grounds
of the former concentration camp,
he wrote in the visitors book:
"One is ashamed for mankind,
one is unhappy that such a mar-
tyrdom was imposed on so many
men, women and children. One
shouldn't resign oneself to evil
and shouldn't lose hope in
strengthening the spirit of fra-
ternity in the world."
Accompanying the French
prime minister to Auschwitz
were senior Cabinet Minister Si-
mone Veil, a former president of
the European Parliament who
was herself an inmate at
Auschwitz, and Jean Kahn., head
of both the European Jewish
Congress and of CRIF, an um-
brella organization representing
French Jewry.
Mr. Balladur's visit to Poland
was the first official visit to that
country by a French premier
since 1970.

Remarkably, Stephen Birm-
ingham, who wrote the well
known three- book series
tracing the rise of Jewish
European immigrants in
American Jewish culture —
Our Crowd, The Grandees
and The Rest of Us — is not
Jewish.
