"It's important for a retail
outlet, especially an indepen-
dent one, to develop a person-
ality and get a human voice to
speak for it. Kosins Clothes had
a very high-profile existence a
few years ago when it had Har-
ry Kosins, the quintessential
haberdasher, combining with
Chuck Daly, the man who was
known for his garb.
`The public can have a short
memory. Once Harry Kosins
died and Chuck Daly left town
(to mach the New Jersey Nets),
it was important for Kosins to
keep dribbling the ball, to make
a re-attachment. That's what
Kosins needs to do today." ❑

Women's Lot
Is Reviewed
London (JTA) — British Chief
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has called
on all Jewish communal bodies
in Britain to examine how to im-
plement the recommendations of
a just-released review of women's
standing in British Jewry.
The review, which ran the
gamut of issues from child care
to rabbis' insensitivity to women's
concerns, was published last
month after a two-year period of
inquiry. It shows there is much
territory to cover to improve
women's lot in the Jewish com-
munity here.
The report shows a strong con-
sensus among women in all
walks of life in the community
that their needs have been ig-
nored for far too long.
This has left Jewish women in
Britain feeling marginalized in
both communal and religious life,
especially among the Orthodox.
Repeatedly, women expressed
the desire for greater participa-
tion in prayer services. Among
their complaints were the pres-
ence of the mechitzah dividing
men and women in the syna-
gogue, and even the synagogue
architecture.
There was also an almost
unanimous call for greater spir-
itual involvement in religious life,
through study and the creation
of special prayers and rituals to
mark key life-cycle events.
The review, whose findings are
based on months of meetings and
discussions with thousands of
women across the country, also
highlighted the concerns of sin-
gle women, virtually all of whom
said they felt excluded in one way
or another from communal and
synagogue life.
There were, for example, com-
plaints from elderly women who
had been stricken from syna-
gogue lists following the death of
their husbands.
