Call The Jewish News 354-5959 A 'Breakthrough' For Teva Company Israel's Teva pharmaCeutical com- pany has developed an interna- tionally-patented device that protects health workers who take blood samples from being acci- dentally infected with AIDS and hepatitis B. The relatively simple device, described by the company as a "breakthrough," is manufactured by its Travenol subsidiary's Mig- da plant in Kiryat Shmona. It is a tiny device attached to the plastic pipette that allows the collection of blood without any spattering on the health worker. Called SampLink, the device has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is expected to be marketed by the tens of millions around the world. Because it is disposable, the mar- ket is expected to be very large. Baxter International, the giant pharmaceutical firm which re- portedly controls some 70 percent of the total world blood donations, has signed a $10 million deal with Travenol for marketing SampLink in North America from 1995 to 1997. Travenol has signed contracts with two other leading blood-col- lection-bag companies, one Euro- pean and the other Australian. O . KUDOS Do you have an item for "Kudos?"
