Responding
To Terrorism
LESLEY PEARL STAFF WRITER
L
ike many South American
Jews, Jorge Singman views
Argentina as a land of con-
tradictions.
The Buenos Aires native now
living in Birmingham knows
anti-Semitism exists in his home-
land, but "You're not afraid to
walk the streets there as a Jew,
either."
In Buenos Aires, Mr. Singman
belonged to Jewish social clubs
and attended synagogue. He
moved to the United States al-
most six years ago to pursue his
career in robotics.
Monday, he called his family.
He joined the world in learn-
ing about the terrorist bombing
in Buenos Aires that killed at
least 27 people and injured more
than 100. The building housed
the headquarters of the Delega-
tion of Argentine Israeli Associ-
ations and the Argentine
Israelite Mutual Association.
Mr. Singman's family offered
little information.
"For the Jewish population
there, a terrorist attack is not so
surprising," Mr. Singman said.
Argentinean President Carlos
Menem publicly deplored the at-
tack and sealed the country's bor-
ders after detaining suspects for
questioning, a gesture Mr.
Singman called, "Helpful, yet
again representative of the many
contradictions in Argentina."
Although the South American
country has been under democ-
ratic leadership for 11 years, Mr.
Singman believes "the past
doesn't just go away."
Rabbi Leonardo Bitran of
Shanrey Zedek B'nai Israel Cen-
ter understands.
In 1985, the Chilean native
spent one year in Argentina.
"For the average South Amer-
ican Jew not living in Argentina,
Argentina is like America.
There's a high Jewish population
(250,000), different branches of
the religion are represented and
the best Jewish schools are there.
There are Jewish areas where
Yiddish is the spoken language,"
Rabbi Bitran said. "But Argenti-
na is also known for its anti-
Semitism, so I shouldn't be too
surprised by the terrorist action."
Mr. Singman said corruption
is imbedded in Argentinean so-
ciety. Rabbi Bitran thought the
bombing may be in response to
the peace process in the Middle
East.
In efforts to speak against ter-
rorist acts of all kinds, the Jew-
ish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit will hold
a memorial service for victims of
the bombing Sunday evening at
Adat Shalom Synagogue. Ser-
vices begin at 7:30 p.m. El
