"Summer Pleasures," an exhibi-
tion highlighting a mix of objects
in metal, clay and wood will open
at the Sybaris Gallery July 23
and run thru Aug. 18.
Hoss Haley and Nancy Koen-
ingsberg both work in metals.
Mr. Haley's forged metalwork
will stretch one's imagination of
what would seem to be a cold,
rigid art form. The fluidity he
achieves in his work and his sur-
face treatments, will change peo-
ple's expectations of black_-
smithing.
New York City fiber artist
Nancy Koeningsberg probes the
relationship between natural
phenomena and modern tech-
nology in a series of wire con-
structions that are metaphors for
the urban landscape. Her work,
expressing responses to environ-
mental cycles, is affected by her
experience of metropolitan life
and embodies a dichotomy sym-
bolized by the artist's simultane-
ous use of the grid and the
attempt to move it around in dif-
ferent ways.
The two ceramic artists in the
show David Furman and Richard
Newman both create trompe roeil
work — that is they make objects
which imitate or mimic the real
thing. The gaiety and ironic hu-
mor of David Furman's work re-
sides in the banality of everyday
life pinned to bulletin boards,
taped to drawing boards, chalked
and lying on blackboards or
arranged as "bouquets" of brush-
es, pencils, and/or other artist's
tools in tin cans.
Richard Newman is somewhat
new on the ceramic art scene, but
his life-size baseball glove sculp-
tures conjure up old memories for
many adults who as young chil-
dren played endless hours of
baseball during summer vaca-
tions. Mr. Newman rescues
weathered, old gloves from sec-
ond-hand stores and yard sales.
Rounding out the show will be
wood-turners Dennis Elliott and
Dan Kvitka.
