Terrorists Enter Gaza
With Yassir Arafat

Jerusalem (JTA) — One day af-
ter Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation Chairman Yassir Arafat
returned to take up official resi-
dence in the Gaza Strip, a furor
erupted between the PLO and Is-
rael over the entry of four PLO
officials with records of terrorist
acts against Israeli civilians.
The four were among 13 PLO
officials who accompanied Mr.
Arafat to Gaza when he arrived
to begin taking charge of day-to-
day-responsibilities for running
Palestinian affairs in the newly
autonomous areas of Gaza and
Jericho.
When Israeli security forces
discovered their presence, Israel

ousi — helped plan the murder-
ous 1974 attack on a school in the
Galilee development town of
Ma'alot in which 21 Israeli teen-
agers were killed. An Israeli sol-
dier and three Palestinian -
terrorists were also killed in the
raid on the northern Israeli town.
Mr. Nofal and Mr. Jayou,si lat-
er left Gaza as did Mustafa
Liftawi, also known as Abu Fi-
ras, who was among the planners
of the massacre at the 1972
Olympic Games in Munich in
which 11 Israeli athletes were
killed.
Dr. Ahmed Tibi, an Israeli
Arab who serves as a close ad-
viser to Arafat, drove the three

Have You Heard?

EARLIER DETECTION OF
HEARING LOSS
Because only those newborns who are
thought to be at risk for hearing loss are typ-
ically screened for hearing problems, only half
of hearing losses are detected at birth. The
average age at which severe to profound deaf-
ness is diagnosed is two and a half years, while
milder cases of hearing loss may go unde-
tected until a child reaches the age of five or
six. Because a six-month-old baby already
begins to grasp the meaning of language, it is
critical that hearing losses be detected as ear-
ly as possible. Even a mild loss can prove to
be detrimental to a child's learning. Studies
show that a child with a hearing loss in just
one ear is ten times more likely to repeat a
grade than a child with normal hearing.

In general, the sooner a hearing problem
is detected, the less likely a child is to suffer
social and academic problems as a result. To-
day's hearing tests are quick and painless. If
you have further questions about how to pro-
tect your good hearing, feel free to call us here
at LUCAS-CRUZ HEARING AID SERVICE,
where we have on staff knowledgeable hear-
ing instruments consultants who are state li-
censed and have been working with hearing
aids for the past two decades. Our friendly fa-
cility is easy to reach at 18899 W. 12 Mile Rd.
in Lathrup Village (424-8450).
P.S. A child may be fitted with a hearing in-
strument as early as two or three months of
age.

forced three of the men to leave
Gaza immediately. Israel also
moved to close the border cross-
ings separating Gaza from Egypt
and the West Bank from Jordan.
The fourth Palestinian was be-
ing sought by the Palestinian po-
lice in Gaza, and Israeli officials
said the borders would remain
closed until he left Gaza.
Speaking to Israel Radio,
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin
said he took "a most serious view"
of the attempt made by "someone
close to Arafat" to smuggle in
men whose entry Israel had long
firmly opposed.
Israeli and Palestinian securi-
ty men huddled together for
hours to resolve what initially
looked like a major crisis of con-
fidence.
Under the terms of the May 4
Cairo accords for implementing
self-rule in Gaza and Jericho, Is-
rael may veto the entry of Pales-
tinians it deems undesirable.
The four, who are among those
on Israel's blacklists, have con-
sistently been refused entry by
Israel.
Two of those smuggled in —
Mamdouh Nofal and Nihad Jay-

men out of Gaza into Egyptian
territory.
Dr. Tibi later said he would
wait at Gaza's Palestine Hotel—
Mr. Arafat's new beachfront
headquarters — for the fourth
man.
Jihad Amarneh, the fourth
man smuggled into Gaza, is said
to have left Mr. Arafat's Al Fatah
wing of the PLO and has appar-
ently joined the militant Islam-
ic Jihad movement.
A number of Palestinian lead-
ers — including Yasser Abed
Rabbo, the newly named minis-
ter of information in the Pales-
tinian governing council — were
not permitted entry into the self-
rule zones during the border clos-
ings.
The crisis with the PLO offi-
cials came just a few days after
Mr. Rabin had ordered a tempo-
rary closing of all Gaza crossings
into Israel.
