Fires Hit
NY Synagogue
New York (JTA) — Congregation
Derech Emunoh's struggle to sur-
vive among the vacant lots in a
nearly abandoned area of New
York suffered a devastating set-
back with a suspicious fire.
Although most Jews have long
since forsaken the Arverne sec-
tion of Queens, Rabbi David Co-
hen, spiritual leader of the
Orthodox congregation, has kept
the synagogue alive.
That drive against the odds
was continuing even after flames
gutted the congregation, causing
an estimated $100,000 to
$300,000 damage to the already
run-down structure.

crimes.
The fire started on a ground-
level terrace and consumed much
of the sanctuary and numerous
prayerbooks. The Torah scrolls
were safely removed.
The synagogue's longevity is a
tribute to the once-thriving Jew-
ish community in Arverne, said
Rabbi Cohen. "There are a few
hundred elderly, most living on
Social Security in Dayton Tow-
ers," he said, referring to a near-
by apartment complex.
To keep the synagogue going,
several dozen people have been
traveling to Derech Emunoh from
long distances, including Man-
hattan, Rabbi Cohen said.
Among those who have been
coming is a contingent from the
Brooklyn-based Jewish Youth
Renaissance, a group the rabbi
founded.
The housing surrounding the
synagogue has long been demol-
ished, and a planned redevelop-
ment project was canceled in
1992. Hopes remain that a new
community will arise.
Irving Klein, director of the
Jewish Community Council of
the Rockaway Peninsula, said
bias crime against Jews in the
area was rare and that the last
known incident was a swastika
