But after the tears have been
shed and the heaven piercing
laments have been wailed, is
there nothing further that can be
done? Where are you? Roll up
your sleeves. There is massive re-
building to do; there are gaping
wounds to bind up; there are new
hopes to nurture, new dreams to
salvage out of the ashes. Where,
indeed, are you?
To each individual who lives
at a time of social decay and
moral decline, the probing ques-
tion is addressed, "Where are
you?" How are things in that part
of the community that you in-
habit? Are you part of the solu-
tion or part of the problem? What
are you contributing to the moral
climate? Remember, the com-
munity is only the individual 'writ
large,' the sum total of all the peo-
ple who inhabit it. If everybody
in the community behaved like
you, would it be a better or a
worse place to live in?
Where are you? What values
do you represent in your personal
life? The sages say, before you
commit a moral action, you
should think of the world as
poised between goodness and evil.
Since the scales are perfectly bal-
anced, your act has the power to
tilt that balance either in the
direction of goodness or to the
side of evil. You, and you alone
have the power to make that de-
termination. Where are you? ❑

Bereavement
Support Group

Temple Israel began a Bereave-
ment Support Group July 12
which will meet for eight consec-
utive weeks and for a ninth ses-
sion on Sept. 13. All meetings are
held at the temple and are facil-
itated by trained and experienced
leaders. The group meets from
7:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and
is open to the entire Jewish com-
munity.
