ward professional qualifications.
Men and women will study in
evening classes separately.
Students can major in business,
communication arts and in-
structional technology or Judaic
studies. An interdisciplinary de-
gree is also an option.
Classes will begin at the
Lubavitch Education Center in
Farmington Hills. Library lend-
ing agreements are in the works,
as is a computer center.
"The aim is not to teach liter-
ature or philosophy. We want to
be helpful in achieving employ-
able skills," Dr. Kagan said.
Professors from Wayne State
University and the University of
Detroit are discussing teaching
opportunities with the institute.
Degree programs demand 120
credit hours for completion. Time
spent in Israel can be applied to-
ward credit hours.
Dr. Kagan is working toward
accreditation for the institute by
the Michigan State Board of
Education. Ultimately, the insti-
tute is answerable to the board.
In addition, Dr. Kagan hopes
to gain regional, voluntary ac-
creditation which would allow the
institute to receive federal fund-
ing.
Candidacy for accreditation
will probably take one year.
Usually, an additional four to six
years follow before full accredi-
tation is granted.
Tuition dollar amounts have
not yet been finalized. Dr. Kagan
expects state aid, grants and
scholarships will keep prices
within reach.
Dr. Kagan hopes for about 24
students this fall. He emphasized
that while the institute caters to
Orthodox students, the opportu-
nity is open to all.
"I hope the name doesn't put
people off. We're not on a mission
to propagate a message, not in
the school," Dr. Kagan said.
"Students have to have a lot of
trust in us. This is the risk of an
institute which has not yet been
proven. It's a certain challenge
and a certain adventure." ❑
