WOMENS FINAL SALE Rosalie Lake: General studies principal. ies as responsive to the half-day as possible," Ms. Lake said. "I feel absolutely comfortable in my position as general stud- ies principal. If I didn't, it wouldn't be so easy to look for- ward to that which I'm not fa- miliar with. It gives me the emotional energy." At the close of the 1992-93 school year, Akiva consolidated the positions of upper- and low- er-school secular studies princi- pals into one role. Akiva, like other area Jewish day schools, divides its hours be- tween secular and Judaic stud- ies. Ms. Lake admits some areas of education, like arts and ath- letics, must be fostered outside of the school due to lack of time. She believes day schools are successful because "the students and families are committed to ed- ucation. The children are asked to be the best students in half the time." In addition, she views Akiva students, as a rule, "more fo- cused" than their public-school peers. "Most of them know upon graduation they'll go to Israel. It's part of their plan. And most leave knowing which college they'll attend upon their return." Ms. Lake plans to spend the summer meeting with teachers, determining their hopes and needs to build a cohesive ap- proach to social and academic is- sues. Independent schools, Ms. Lake said, allow for the oppor- tunity to research and quickly implement problem-solving de- cisions. Her long-term plans include learning Hebrew and reentering the classroom part time. "At the Valley School I taught an hour of fifth-grade math. It was my fa- vorite part of the day," Ms. Lake said. Ms. Lake pursued her career after spending time volunteer- ing . "I was the mom who was al- ways at my children's school. I enjoyed it so much I went back to get my degree in education. "Both her bachelor's and mas- ter's degrees are from Oakland University in Rochester. ❑ We have taken up to 70% on all womens Spring, Summer and Fall Clothing, outerwear, sportswear, accessories and footwear The Claymore Shops 210 S.
