JAL TABLE

The Welcome Mat Is Out

There are about 25 Morton's
of Chicago steakhouses, all com-
pany-owned, none franchised ...
Its food costs are high but Mor-
ton's is probably one of the few
expensive restaurants where to-
tal value is given.
Morton's in Southfield seats
130 in the 1,850-square -foot din-
ing room, with another 30 in the
550-square-foot bar-lounge and
50 more in a private boardroom.
In a week's time, it goes
through over 700 pounds of beef,
more than 500 pounds of pota-
toes, 150 pounds of asparagus,
18 to 22 pounds of smoked
salmon, 75 pounds of shrimp.
Lunch is served Monday
through Friday 11:30 am. to 2:30

Al Morton's, the
food fits the
reputation.

p.m. ... dinner Monday through
Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. ...
and Sunday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. ...
Reservations are recommended.
Morton's of Chicago, with its
26 units, may be noted as one of
America's finest steak houses,
but there are few who would de-
bate that it is also among the tops
in fine dining ... meat or seafood
... and in most instances a good
example of getting what you pay
for.
CONGRATS ... to Jim Hack
... on his 60th birthday ...to
Danielle Hack ... on her 30th
birthday.
HORSES WILL be galloping
and cane mallets with bamboo
heads will be banging white-
painted balls all over the field 1
p.m. July 16 ... It's the sixth an-
nual Southfield Gold Cup Polo
Competition at beautiful forest-
ed Duns Scotus, Nine Mile and
Evergreen ... The event brings
over 3,500 folks for the enter-
taining afternoon, with major
sponsors holding private recep-
tions in tents lining the playing
field ... Admission is $5 in ad-
vance and $6 at the polo match
($1 children 12 and under.)
GET WELL wishes ... to Sid
Brodie in Room 723 at Provi-
dence Hospital ... to Sarah Pitt.
BEE'S NOW called "Dan The
Matchmaker" ... Three times
that retired Chinese restaurateur
Dan Woo has taken grandchil-
dren to Hong Kong in hopes of
meeting a mate ... and he's hit a
home run each trip.
First was Victor, then Arthur,
and most recently, Joyann The
children of Gene and Ruby Woo
were escorted around by family
friends there who could also
speak English ... and each met
their life's companion in a 100
percent score by Dan.
Forty years ago, Dan Woo
opened Hoa Kow on Nine Mile in

Oak Park with son Gene, and to-
day it is the only pioneer re-
maining in that sector ... A
second Hoa Kow opened by Gene
is in Crosswinds Mall on Orchard
Lake Road in West Bloomfield.
All three were married in
Hong Kong ... and then had a
second wedding here with lavish
receptions at Penna's Hall on
Van Dyke in Warren ... Victor
had 650 guests, and Arthur 600
Joyann and Jimmy Yu had
700 in an almost-Jewish marital
setting ... In keeping with some
Jewish ways, Joyann and Jim-
my's wedding ceremony here was
called for 6:30 p.m. and started
around 7 p.m. ... Unlike the oth-
er two ceremonies, this lasted a
little longer, almost 10 minutes
... All three were entirely in Eng-
lish.
If people didn't know better,
they'd think this was a Jewish re-
ception with Chinese guests ...
There seemed to be so many corn-
munity-ites who partook of the
chicken noodle soup, filet and
boneless breast of chicken stuffed
with spinach and feta cheese,
pasta salad and an out-of-this-
world sweet table.
At the weddings of Victor and
Arthur, the challah was cut by
yarmulke-headed Norman Jaf-
fee ... For Joyann, it was Hoa
Kow of West Bloomfield evening
hostess Carol Homer's father-in-
law, Jack Homer, also wearing a
yarmulke.
Not a bad idea was the tall box
where envelopes with checks or
cash could be dropped instead of
guys bending their tux out of
shape with stuffed pockets ...
Boxed gifts were galore ... and in
the Chinese custom, Joyann was
covered with gold ... necklaces
and bracelets.
Our table was a fun one with
Sid Frumkin, Millie Bell, barris-
ter Paul and Nancy Frumkin
Jerry Glassman came over to ex-
tol wonderful words about his
Glassman parties for seniors at
the Jewish Community Center
in Oak Park ... Mickey and Mor-
rey Beresh never looked better
... Harold Finegood kept his
record intact by wearing a sport
shirt and, of course, no tie ...
Mitchell Merzon brought back
memories of yesteryears ... Hard
to believe "little Mitchell" has
been married so long to Kathy ...
Gene and Ruby Woo going from
table to table raising glasses with
"Fchayim!"
So if you guys and gals are
looking for a mate ... see Dan
"The Matchmaker" Woo ... Who
knows, maybe sneaky Dan has
some hidden prizes stashed away
right here.
GOOD WAITRESS Dept.
Sheri Croteau ... at Ocean Grille
in Birmingham ... personable,
smiling and efficient ... Small
wonder why so many folks ask to
sit at her station. CI
