to look forward to; and this time,
there was an especially festive at-
mosphere, even a small band
playing on the lower deck — and,
of course, views of the expansive
lake framed by mountain peaks.
A lake cruise, cable car ride,
and cogwheel train — all in one
delightful afternoon. No wonder
I was "high" on Lucerne and its
pleasures. The next day came an-
other adventure — but this on in-
doors — when I had the chance
to learn about the close-knit Jew-
ish community of Lucerne by
meeting a family who lives here.
After a quick bus ride — bus
service in Lucerne is prompt and
efficient — I was walking down
Bruchstrasse, a residential street
not far from the lake. I passed the
synagogue, a dignified corner
building that resembles the main
synagogue of Frankfurt. Then,
just one block further, three chil-
dren stood outside, waiting to
greet me and escort me upstairs
to the Rosen residence.

lier in the day, she invited me on
the spot to come over for a vis-
it.She's a mother of 12 childreti;-
ages 2 to 20, and was already
busy preparing for dinner.
"We have a small community
and people try to open their arms
to visitors," she said. And even
though it's small, it's a very ac-
tive community. There are a Jew-
ish day school for girls; Jewish
organizations; and the syna-
gogue, built in 1912, where ser-
vices are held daily.
The Rosen family had previ-
ously lived in Johannesburg, Am-
sterdam and the Negev, so they
are adept at settling in new
places. Even so, the move to
Lucerne was a challenge, since
none of them spoke Swiss-Ger-
man, the language of northern
Switzerland.
"All of us had to learn a new
language," said Mrs. Rosen. "And
the children picked it up espe-
cially quickly."
In this multi-lingual family,
the children also speak English,
German and Hebrew — and the
older ones also speak Yiddish.
They are living Jewish lives in
Switzerland. In the summer, they
attend Jewish camps where they
meet youngsters from other cities
in Switzerland, get a chance to
enjoy outdoor activities.
"You really feel you belong to
one community, a unified com-
munity," said Mrs. Rosen. "And
because it's so small, it's a corn-
munity where everyone is im-
portant."
