Amsterdam (JTA) — A branch of
Jews for Jesus has been estab-
lished in Amsterdam.
Calling itself Beth Yeshua, the
group of so-called messianic Jews
meets weekly for Sabbath ser-
vices.
The group's leader is a Dutch-
born Jew who believes that the
opposition of many Jews to Jews
converted to Christianity is a
remnant of "ghetto mentality."
The establishment of the group
is notable because attendance at
mainstream Christian church-
es in Holland is on a downward
turn and has become the bastion
mostly of the elderly.
Most Christians in the Nether-
lands attend a church service
only once or twice a year, for
Christmas and Easter.
Russians Win
Design Prize
Moscow (JTA) — Russian archi-
tecture students Alexander Tsi-
mailo and Alexei Ilyin recently
won first prize in a synagogue de-
sign competition organized by the
American Jewish Joint Distrib-
ution Committee, the Moscow
Jewish Art Center and the
Moscow Institute of Architecture.
The winners worked together
on an architectural model for a
synagogue. Their entry was one
of 45 submitted by students at
the Moscow Architecture Insti-
tute.
According to the JDC, the syn-
agogue design competition was
the first of its kind here in 75
years.
The winning entry, as well as
others, will be displayed at JDC
headquarters in New York and
at its offices in Jerusalem.
Decisions Affect
Voting Rights Act
Washington (JTA) — Jewish
groups have hailed two Supreme
Court decisions that were wide-
ly seen as limiting the ability of
the Voting Rights Act to apply to
districts created to increase mi-
nority representation in govern-
ment.
In the first decision, the court,
in a 7-2 ruling on the final day of
its term, overturned a court-or-
dered redistricting of the Florida
House of Representatives.
And in a 5-4 split, the court
also overturned a court-ordered
change to expand a Georgia coun-
ty commission.
The decisions were widely seen
as limiting the scope of the Vot-
ing Rights Act, which originally
passed Congress in 1965 and was
amended in 1982.
