Jerusalem resident Marilyn Ben-
Eli, formerly of Southfield.
"The polls show that the vast
majority of people don't want him
here, even to pray, and the gov-
ernment said Jerusalem will al-
ways remain in Jewish hands.
"But people here are in dis-
tress. A lot of things have been
said that have not been held to."
Mrs. Ben-Eli resides in East
Talpiot in Jerusalem. It's beside
an Arab enclave. The tension be-
tween the two areas, especially
since the signing of the peace
treaty, has been unmistakable,
she said.
"A family friend was stabbed
— there has been all kinds of
trouble, people here have had
Molotov cocktails thrown in their
windows. Our daughter won't let
us go out at night anymore.
"We have guards at the kinder-
garten now. We had to get them:
we want our children safe. We're
frightened."

love to see it work out," Mr. Lax

Mr. Lax said. "We'll be going
around the city from now on.
"We're very uncomfortable
these days, to say the least."

swore in new members of the
Palestinian governing council. He
vowed to return following a brief
visit in Jordan.
"We shall rebuild our institu-
tions that the occupation de-
stroyed," he told the crowd. "We
want to build a homeland of free
men, a homeland of democracy,
freedom and equality."
At the same time, Mr. Arafat
expressed interest in visiting east
Jerusalem. He says he wants to
go there to pray. Jewish observers
say Mr. Arafat has something
else on his mind.
"He has called for a jihad (holy
war) for Jerusalem' and he wants
PLO headquarters here," said

added. "But we just can't trust
Arafat. The Arabs have said it
publicly: they want to dump us
into the sea."
Mr. Arafat's visit touched off a

tents outside the prime minister's
office — staged a massive demon-

said he hoped the protests would
signal to the Rabin government
