Fighter Jets
Sent To Israel
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israeli air
force is preparing to receive sev-
eral dozen U.S. Air Force F-16
fighter jets that were promised
by the Bush administration af-
ter the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
The air force commander, Maj.
Gen. Herzl Bodinger, said that
the aircraft, scheduled to be de-
livered next month, will come
from U.S. stockpiles.
He did not disclose the exact
number of F-16s involved, but ac-
cording to earlier reports, more
than 50 jets are to be delivered.
The Bush administration com-
mitted itself to giving Israel be-
tween $700 million and $900
million worth of military hard-
ware from U.S. stockpiles. The
promised hardware included F-
16s as well as Apache and Black-
hawk helicopters, both of which
are to arrive by September.
The promise was made by the
Bush administration as com-
pensation for Israeli restraint in
the face of a monthlong bom-
bardment by Iraqi Scud missiles
against Israeli civilian targets
during the Gulf War.
In a related development, the
latest edition of the air force mag-
azine discloses that four high-
ranking Israeli air force pilots
recently conducted a test-flight
of the advanced Soviet-made
MiG-29 fighter jet in Romania.
The MiG-29, used by the Iraqi,
Iranian and Syrian air forces, is
considered the leading Soviet-
made jet.
The four Israeli pilots each
flew the plane for 20 minutes.
All the participating pilots not-
ed that despite some advantages,
the MiG-29's overall performance
was still inferior to comparable
Western-made jets.
Arab Stabs Jew
In Jerusalem
Jerusalem (JTA) — A 31-year-
old Jewish resident of
Jerusalem's Neve Ya'acov neigh-
borhood was stabbed repeated-
ly in the head by a Palestinian
assailant, who afterward escaped.
Yoram Belisha, 31, was re-
pairing his car when a young
Palestinian lunged at him with
a knife. The injured man was
rushed to Hadassah Hospital in
Ein Kerem, where his condition
•was pronounced serious but not
life-threatening. Doctors said he
lost a great deal of blood.
Prior to the attack, the Pales-
tinian had gone from house to
house in the area asking for work
tarring roofs.
Mr. Belisha's cries for help
drove off his attacker, who fled in
the direction of the nearby Arab
village of Dahiet el-Barid.

THE HARD TRUTH
In order to better hear speech at a distance
or in noisy environments, those with hearing
losses may turn to assistive listening devices
(ALDs). The most affordable of these are hard-
wired systems which transmit sound from
source to listener through a cord. A speaker (or
other source) speaks directly into a microphone
and the electrical signal is sent through a wire
to the listener's hearing aid, a neckloop, an ear-
phone, or silhouette inductor. Hardwired sys-
tems that are "hearing aid dependent" must be
used with a personal hearing instrument, while
"stand alone systems" or "personal amplifiers"
may be used with either a hearing instrument
or earphones, ALDs isolate the speech or sound
from a speaker, radio, 1V, or other audio source
and send it directly to the ear without back-
ground noise interference.
