What is Bet Chaverim's
future?
Less than a year after they be-
gan, the temple founders believe
they have created something that
will last. But they're not giving
themselves much time to cele-
brate and relax.
Ms. Sadler wants the temple
school to be in operation one day
a week this fall. "We have about
35 kids among all these families,"
she points out.
The temple might rent space
in the next year or two and will
then perhaps think about build-
ing or buying a structure of its
own. But the school comes first.
"It's a work-in-progress," says Ms.
Sadler. "It's our next project for
September along with the High
Holidays."
Until then, the families of Bet
Chaverim will continue to prac-
tice Judaism as they have done
for the past nine months: an
afternoon at a lake with Hav-
dalah in July, a Shabbat service
barbecue in August, and a Shab-
bat pot-luck dinner in Septem-
ber. Ms. Sadler says that she and
her co-founders want "to create a
Jewish community that you don't
have to drive 20 miles for. People
need connectedness—for births,
shivas, bar and bat mitzvahs.
"We had 60 people at a Shab-
bat dinner. Friendships have
been born that weren't there
before." ❑
