Hotel Chain
Wants Link

The French Meridien hotel
chain, which is owned by Air
France, is interested in doing
business in Israel, an official of
the company told Tourism Min-
ister Uzi Baram.
Francesco Noseda, vice presi-
dent of Meridien, the second
largest hotel chain in Europe,
said the company is interested
in reaching management agree-
ments soon with existing hotels
in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Eilat.
Meridien currently has hotels
in the Gulf states, Syria, Tunisia
and Egypt. In the long-term, the
company might also be interest-
ed in joint investments with Is-
raeli or other companies to build
new hotels, Mr. Noseda said.
Mr. Noseda said his three-day
visit to Israel convinced him the
first city in which the chain
should seek a hotel is Jerusalem,
even though Meridien's proper-
ties usually are in centers of busi-
ness tourism.
Tourism Ministry director-
general Eli Gonen pointed out
the potential of such events as
the three millenia anniversary
of
Jerusalem and Christianity's
two millenia celebration.
Mr. Gonen also noted that oth-
er chains which had not wanted
to operate in Israel in the past—
such as Accor and Marriott —
also recently expressed an in-
terest in the country.
