flights from various European
cities and close relations are
maintained with the ministry of
tourism in Europe.
For most of the traveling Eu-
ropeans, the impetus to visit this
Israeli resort has nothing to do
with religion; indeed, many are
fully ignorant of the fact that
Eliat is within Israeli borders.
Rather, the proximity of Eliat to
most European cities, the rela-
tively reasonable cost of the hotels
and, of course, the flawless mid-
winter weather, draws a re-
spectable number of European
tourists, most of whom stay an
average of seven to 10 nights.
While the majority of the
visitors in Eliat mid-winter are
Europeans, the Eliat summer is
dominated by Israeli tourists. It
is hoped that with the opening of
the Royal Beach Hotel, a sizable
portion of the 50,000 Israelis who
visit the Turkish resort of Antalia
on an annual basis will instead
seek out the southern Israeli city.
Although the massive building
of hotels in Eliat began almost a
decade ago, the resort town has
experienced a 90 percent occu-
pancy rate, with the exception of
the period of the Gulf War. A
small but steady part of that
occupancy rate is due to Ameri-
/- cans who constitute five to 10 per-
cent of the tourist population
year-round, usually arriving on
an individual basis, for an
average two- to three-night stay.
The building of the Royal
Beach Hotel is an example of
international collaboration at its
best. Workers were hired from
coutnless countries and their
varied places of birth were
evidenced in the polyglot flavor
of a walk through the construc-
tion site.
Here, on the ladder, were two
men from Germany; over there,
painstakingly painting the ceil-
ing was a man from Ireland. The
trees around outdoor pools were
imported from Tahiti, the furni-
ture being installed in the not-
yet-complete suites was made in
Italy and the cabinets which
would be installed hailed from
England. The hotel personnel
hired from within Israel repre-
sent the cream of the service
industry crop, many of whom are
graduates of a hotel management
program at Cornell University.
Even before the hotel opened,
business was booming. By early
winter, fifteen international
groups had already booked their
1994 conventions at the Royal
Beach Hotel and reservations
were coming in at a steady rate.
Standing on the 14th floor ter-
race of the Royal Beach Hotel in
early March, overlooking the glit-
tering resort town of Eliat, the
visitor from snow-bound New
York was tempted to stay.
