Michigan's total of $9,000,
raised at seven sites, was tops
among the 10 states which took
part in the Workout for Kids.
Nationally, more than 2,000
children at 75 schools, day-care
centers and Little Gym fitness
centers took part in the fund-rais-
er and generated more than
$20,000.
Chevron Oil Company and Lit-
tle Gym International Inc., a na-
tional franchise that provides
fitness, motor skills development
and related programs for children
ages 4 months to 12 years, were
the national sponsors.

Index Rise
Stuns Experts
The Israel Consumer Price Index
(CPI) jumped 1.2 percent in May
as housing prices continued to
soar.
Rahamim Ozama, head of the
Central Bureau of Statistics' price
division, estimated that inflation
is now running at 14 percent an-
nually based on the first five
months of the year.
Most economists were sur-
prised by the CPI jump, expect-
ing housing prices to moderate ha
the aftermath of the stock mar-
ket's slump. They thought the
drop in investors' wealth would
curb their appetite for housing.
However, "housing keeps strik-
ing back," said Jonathan Katz,
The goal of 8 percent
annual inflation is
unreachable.
head of Economic Modeling and
Forecasting.
Housing prices rose 2.3 percent
last month as apartment prices
increased by 2.5 percent and rents
by 1.2 percent. Housing con-
tributed 40 percent of the CPI
rise.
"We weren't surprised," said
Bank Hapoalim's chief economist
Ptachia Bar-Shavit, who predict-
ed the CPI would rise 1 percent
in May.
He blamed the increase on the
government for failing to move de-
cisively to lower housing prices.
Nearly everyone agrees that
the government's original goal of
8 percent annual inflation is now
unreachable. Prices have in-
creased by 5.6 percent during the
past five months and it is unlike-
ly that in the remaining seven
months they will rise only 2.4 per-
cent.
Last week, Hapoalim econo-
mists adjusted their inflation es-
timate for the year upwards to
10.5 percent from 9.5 percent.
