After raising more money than any other site in the nation in the Workout for Kids fitness fund- raiser for the City of Hope Na- tional Medical Center in Duarte, Calif., the Harlan students were rewarded with a visit from Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Bart Cornier. Last month, Mr. Conner spent a half-hour with first-, second- and third-graders and another half-hour with fourth- and fifth- graders in the school gym. He talked about fitness, gave a gym- nastics exhibition and worked with a few students on gymnas- tics moves. Thanks to the organizational efforts of Harlan physical educa- tion teacher Denise Parr, about 120 of Harlan's 450 students took part in the fund-raiser for pedi- atric cancer and diabetes research at City of Hope, a non-sectarian facility which was founded by Jewish businessmen in the gar- ment industry in 1913. Harlan students raised $3,200 through sponsors and pledges. "It was an optional activity, but about 75 percent of our third-, fourth- and fifth-graders — and I'd guess about 95 percent of the fifth-graders — participated in the Workout for Kids," Ms. Parr said. "There were so many stu- dents involved that we had to do the program in two sessions one day after school. "During the month they were gathering pledges, we tried to con- vey to our students that they were getting a chance to help other chil- dren who weren't as fortunate as they were while, at the same time, improving their fitness." The Harlan students were al- lowed to ask only family members and close friends for pledges. They were not permitted to solicit door- to-door.
