Recording Secretary Ruth Yost recalls joining the group as a young mother. Members' chil- dren would play together on the floor while the group met. A ju- nior league of NCRW formed from those children. OP "We may not be the same as we were, but we're raising more money with even less women," she said. Member Rose Weiner added, "Our junior group has grown, though." ❑ Miracle Mission 1995: The Applications Flow The end is near. N OP early 1,000 people have signed up for Michigan Mir- acle Mission II since regis- tration opened April 4. The Federation-sponsored trek to Israel, which last year filled three El Al jets, will take place May 7-17, 1995. (The Jewish News will again serve as a co- sponsor.) Though aspects of Mis- sion '95 will mirror last year's trip, planners hope to give par- ticipants a new experience. Travelers will not receive a full itinerary until they get to Israel. However, some general plans have been revealed. On May 7, planes will make a first-time-ever flight directly from Detroit to an air-force base in the southern re- sort city of Eilat. There, passen- gers will plant trees together and take time to recreate in and around the Red Sea. More than 130 people who went on the 1993 Mission already have signed up for the next. Like last year, nearly 50 percent of those registered have never been to Israel. Unlike the last Mission, however, young adults comprise a significant percentage of the group. Nearly 200 have applied to date. The Federation has put a lim- it on the number of 1995 Mis- sionaires. In 1993, El Al jets lifted off with a total of 1,284 Detroi- ters. To lessen logistical compli- cations, the 1995 Mission will include a maximum of 850 peo- ple. Despite the fact that registra- tion currently stands at 950, Fed- eration leaders are encouraging more people to put their names on the waiting list. Cancellations are likely, they say. The Federation's Mission Com- mittee, chaired by Lawrence Jackier, met last Wednesday morning with Tzvi Gerstel, mis- sion director for the United Jew- ish Appeal in Israel. Helping to coach the committee and coordi- nate planning with Israeli insti- tutions, Mr. Gerstel said Detroit's Jewish community is on the fore- front of planning missions. Since hearing about Detroit's highly publicized excursion last year, communities across the country — Cleveland, Atlanta, Philadel- phia and others are following suit. Nationwide, missions are gain- ing popularity. During the 1994 calendar year, the UJA is facili- tating 88 missions bringing 7,500 Americans to Israel. This is up from 3,750 in the late 1980s. "I think the turning point was in 1989 with the Gulf War," Mr. Gerstel said. Ironically, mission participa- tion jumped to nearly 7,000 after the war. During 1995, Mr. Ger- stel believes it will break the 10,000 mark. Detroit's commu- nity will account for 8 percent of the total, he estimates. Planners assure prospective travelers that, despite political unrest, Israel is a safe place to travel. The cost of the trip is $2,495. It is not subsidized by Federation.
