New York (JTA) — Rabbi Yeku-
tiel Yehuda Halberstam, 90,
known as the Klausenburger
rebbe, died at Kiryat Zanz, near (--\
Netanya, June 17.
Born in 1904 in the Austro-
Hungarian city of Klausenburg
— now Cluj, Romania — Rabbi
Halberstam came from a promi-
nent Chasidic line.
During the Holocaust, Rabbi
Halberstam was deported, and
his first wife and 11 children per-
ished at the hands of the Nazis.
Following World War II, Rab-
bi Halberstam came to America,
where he settled in the Williams-
burg section of Brooklyn. He be-
came rebbe to thousands of
Chasidim who originated in west-
ern Galicia, originally part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. They
are centered in the United States
in Williamsburg and in Union
City, N.J.
Rabbi Halberstam remarried
and had five daughters and two
sons.
In 1956, he left for Israel,
where he founded Kiryat Zanz,
near the northern town of Ne-
tanya, and Laniado Hospital in
Netanya. He settled in Kiryat
Zanz in 1962.
His son, Rabbi Zvi Elimelech
Halberstam, the rabbi of Kiryat
Zanz, is expected to be named his
successor.
