ent from the U.S. system. Israelis
vote for a Political Party and the
Party, without primaries, decides
who is on the ticket. This parlia-
mentary system was never in-
tended to serve its citizens; rather
it was intended to fulfill the Zion-
ist Revolution. In fact, Israel has
no constitution and will probably
never have one because Ben-Gu-
rion decided its ratification would
have to await the completed in-
gathering of the exiles. As a re-
sult Israelis, frustrated with the
government's embrace of the
PLO, have no political means to
effectively influence state policy.
As a result of the nature of Is-
raeli politics, the governing elite
are completely insulated from the
needs of the citizenry who, inci-
dentally, pay the politicians'
salaries and risk their lives de-
fending the state. As long as the
political system responds solely
to abstract utopian concerns,
such as international recognition,
rather then being accountable to
its citizens, Israel will continue
to weaken her own security.
Israel desperately needs its cit-
izens' common sense via electoral
reform and direct elections to
guide her and prevent her from
agreeing to additional irrational
international demands.
