`11 in Pontiac presents of ribs and large Greek salad, $18.95. New dessert items vary week- ly ... like Heath Bar pie crunch with soft center, Reese's peanut butter pie, cookie & cream ice cream pie, Big Blitz Snickers pie, and caramel apple Granny ... As before, Bob still makes the fine rice pudding at Brass Pointe. The prices may be low and the quality high, but portions at Brass Pointe are far from skimpy ... There's almost always enough food people can take home for an- other meal. Bob came to America from Yu- goslavia in 1967 ... Danny arrived in 1979 ... Their hard work at pleasing customers has paid off in a big way ... and it is wonder- ful to see that rather than sit on their laurels, they have pumped in about half-million dollars to remodel Brass Pointe in a ges- ture somewhat like saying thanks ... while giving customers an even better place to dine. The booths are print-covered padding with subtle dark green print and inlaid tables sur- rounded by mahogany... There's mahogany between the padded booth back and padded seat ... no more losing things or sitting where it can't be cleaned ... The wide open and airy surrounding is due to one side where a full- wall used to be ... It is now lined with booths topped by squared wall columns ... the other side a nice and cozy smoking area (not one that starts at the next table!) to give privacy in dining ... Slant- ed blinds cover large picture win- dows alongside the western section of the room facing Or- char4 Lake Road. Brass Pointe is open Mon.- Thurs. 11 to 11; Fri. & Sat. 11 to 12; Sun. 12 to 10 ... Also with a fine wine list for choice vino by the glass, half carafe, full carafe or bottle. On all seven days, either Bob or Danny and one of their wives are always there ... No absentee ownership at Brass Pointe ... No having others greet customers who have become like friends ... Both Rita and Bernice are hos- tesses, changing off daily but there together on Friday, Satur- day and Sunday. Family members all pitch in to help ... Bob and Rita's 22-year- old daughter, Violet, is hostess; their 17-year-old son, Kosta, as- sists as a cook when needed, mostly on Fri., Sat. and Sun. weekends; Danny and Bernice's 13-year-old daughter, Olivera, helps in the carry-out depart- ment and does whatever is needed. The smiling, fast and efficient service at Brass Pointe is exem- plified by waitresses like Lori Miller, a bio-chemistry major at Wayne State University; and An- drea Gervasi, both of whom have been at Brass Pointe five years ... Lori is a dinner waitress and Andrea works lunch and dinner, plus being the head waitress training Brass Pointe gals on what and what not to do. This is a restaurant with a lot going for it ... good food, good ser- vice, wonderful atmosphere ... and that hidden essential ... char- acter. Put them all together for an unbeatable combination and you've got Brass Pointe, a fami- ly restaurant that satisfies in every way ... Customers can ask for nothing more. CONGRATS ... to Norma and Phillip Layne, wed on D-Day (June 6, 1944) ... on their 50th an- niversary ... Reception this Sat- urday by children Renee and Joe Stillman, Michael Layne, Heidi and Jeffrey Baill and Mindy and Joe Young, for relatives and close friends, will be at Temple Israel to celebrate the golden years. AVID CRITICS are her own grandchildren ... Birmingham artist Carole Masters lets them paint on canvas with brushes and real acrylic paint ... Then Ali, Harry, Avery and Ethan compare their work with hers and wonder why they can't paint like "Nana". Carole will be at the Art Birm- ingham '94 exhibition and art fair, June 18, 9 a.m. to dusk and June 19, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with food and drinks from area mer- chants ... No admission charge, and artists recognized by their white shirts and black ties. WHEN MILT Markovitz throws a party, he tosses a doozie! ... Well, okay, so the 1500 or more people didn't come because it was his birthday ... And he didn't have to shell out the big bundle this party must have cost ... But the large throng was there shindig- ing a good time at the recent opening of the unbelievable Mac & Ray's on Lake St. Clair. Open bar, food everywhere, even the kitchen, music, danc- ing...People were awe-struck at the new harbor restaurant on North River Drive whose interior looks like a cruise ship. It was Milt's party, too, be- cause he and Roland Beurer of R L B Design, created and sup- plied the spacious 3,000 square foot kitchen, bar and service bar areas, oyster bar, etc., that Ex- ecutive Chef Jeff Baldwin and his large crew really appreciate. Norm LePage is chief consul- tant for the huge restaurant op- eration, and Roger Petri, general manager ... Both are longtime Northwest area favorites. CONGRATS ... to Jerry Davis ... on his 75th birthday ... cele- brated with wife Lillian, their children and grandchildren at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas ... to 6-year-old Brittany Alison Kramer ... on her birthday ... Young Brittany recently gradu- ated kindergarten at Temple Emanu-El.
