Yochai Bin Nun, 69, a former comman- der of the Israeli Navy who re- ceived Israel's Medal of Heroism . for his keen commanding of Is- raeli naval squads during the 1948 War of Independence, died June 6. Gen. Bin Nun was visiting New York in his role as chairman of Israel's Oceanographic Re- ') search Institute, which he found- ( ed in 1966. He received Israel's highest military award for his undercov- er operations during the War of Independence. Under his com- mand, an Egyptian mine sweep- er and the flagship of the Egyptian Navy, the Farouk, were dynamited and sunk as they car- ried troops and ammunition. After graduating from the Massachusetts Tnstitute of Tech- nology, he returned to Israel where he served as commander of the Israeli navy from 1960 to 1966.
