New York (JTA) — Gen. Yochai
Bin Nun, 69, a former comman-
der of the Israeli Navy who re-
ceived Israel's Medal of Heroism
. for his keen commanding of Is-
raeli naval squads during the
1948 War of Independence, died
June 6.
Gen. Bin Nun was visiting
New York in his role as chairman
of Israel's Oceanographic Re-
') search Institute, which he found-
( ed in 1966.
He received Israel's highest
military award for his undercov-
er operations during the War of
Independence. Under his com-
mand, an Egyptian mine sweep-
er and the flagship of the
Egyptian Navy, the Farouk, were
dynamited and sunk as they car-
ried troops and ammunition.
After graduating from the
Massachusetts Tnstitute of Tech-
nology, he returned to Israel
where he served as commander
of the Israeli navy from 1960 to
1966.
Upon retirement, he founded
the research institute, which has
centers in Haifa, Eilat and on the
shores of the Sea of Galilee.
