Sarid Visits
Jericho

Jerusalem (JTA) — Environment
Minister Yossi Sarid this week
become the first Cabinet minis-
ter to pay an official visit to the
autonomous Jericho district in
the West Bank.
Mr. Sarid, a member of the
left-wing Meretz bloc who played
a key role in the autonomy nego-
tiations, said during the visit that
the Palestinians were doing a
good job of organizing their
affairs.
He added that the Israel gov-
ernment had no complaints about
the way the newly formed Pales-
tinian police force was controlling
the autonomous entity.
Mr. Sarid noted that the status
of Jerusalem had not been
brought up during his discussions
with the Palestinian leaders, al-
though the issue of whether the
Palestinians will be able to main-
tain offices in eastern Jerusalem
has been a matter of sharp con-
troversy in Israel over the past
two weeks.
During his visit, Sarid went to
Jericho's ancient synagogue, the
scene of recent conflicts between
the Palestinian police and groups
of Israeli settlers, who have re-
peatedly launched charges that
the synagogue had been dese-
crated by the police.
He advocated keeping an eye
on the settlers to prevent provo-
cations from escalating into out-
right conflict. But he was firmly
opposed to preventing the settlers
from attending the synagogue,
which he said was their right un-
der the terms of the May 4 Cairo
accord for implementing Pales-
tinian self-rule.

Right-Wing Party
Is Created

Jerusalem (JTA) — The country's
two far-right parties, Moledet and
what is left of Techiya, have de-
cided to merge.
Moledet leaders ratified the de-
cision during a rally held in Net-
zarim, the Gaza settlement
whose continued existence has
recently been called into question
for security reasons by Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Techiya
ratified the merger some weeks
ago.
The official name of the new
party is Moledet, the Movement
of the Faithful of Eretz Yisrael
•and Former Techiya Members.
It is expected to be referred to
most often as Moledet.
Speaking at the rally,
Moledet's founder, former Gen.
Rehavam Ze'evi, said that he had
long ago contemplated estab-
lishing a new party that would
have joined with Techiya, but
that Techiya had been opposed
to the idea.
