Assessing The Issues
Of Intermarriage

n educational group that
serves local families and
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit have
teamed up to consider one of the
most challenging issues facing
the Jewish community today: the
intermarried.
Jewish Experiences for Fam-
ilies and the Federation have es-
tablished a task force to examine
the issues of the intermarried and
look at the need for future pro-
grams or services for those it im-
pacts.
The national intermarriage
rate is hovering at 52 percent,
with some areas of the country
reporting rates of 80 percent.

"The purpose of this task force
is not to judge if intermarriage is
good or bad, but to evaluate its ef-
fects on the community and ad-
dress the needs of the
intermarried," said Lynda Giles,
JEFF chairwoman.
In addition, the task force,
which held its initial meeting
June 8, will assess the scope of in-

termarriage in the Detroit area,
explore the needs of those
touched by it and learn about pro-
grams and services throughout
the country.
The task force consists of a
cross-section of the Jewish
community, including those in-
terested in intermarriage both
personally and professionally.
The force plans to render find-
ings by April 1995.
"We need to look at how to
open our community to interfaith
families and keep them a part of
this community," said Robert
Aronson, executive vice president
of Federation. "Addressing this
is a major priority."
Dr. Giles said the timing of the
task force is an outcome of two
factors: her appointment as JEFF
chairwoman and recent data col-
lected nationally.
"We decided to put this to-
gether because it coincided with
where the community is now,"
Dr. Giles said.
"I think we all have some lev-
el of experience with intermar-
riage," said Kathleen Wilson
Fink, who co-chairs the task force
with Jewish News Associate Pub-
lisher Arthur Horwitz.
"I have interfaith issues daily
with my 7- and 9-year-old chil-
dren," said Ms. Fink, whose par-
ents are gentile.
"I have to maintain the in-
tegrity of Jewish values and
make my parents' and siblings'
practices acceptable to my chil-
dren." ❑

You could lose things
like extra weight. High
blood pressure. And high
blood cholesterol levels.
The very things that con-
tribute to heart attack and
stroke.
you have to do is in-
vest wisely at the super-
market.
Buy more in the fresh
produce, pasta, breads
and cereals sections. And
purchase fish, poultry and
lean meats instead of fatty
or processed meats.
Switch to low-fat dairy
products and margarine.
And check the nutritional
listings on food labels.
In short, be selective
about how you play this
market. Because no mat-

you've got a lot to win.
