• •• Jordan Draws Israeli Tourists .4 Amman, Jordan (jTA) — To Is- raelis, the gleaming white capi- tal of Jordan seems as far away and inaccessible as Timbuktu. But in reality, Amman is an hour's drive from Jerusalem — for those who are able to get there. Since 1948, Jordan has denied , entry to all Israelis and all but al handful of Diaspora Jews wish- ing to visit the country. For decades, those few Jews who were able to sneak in with "clean" passports (those without Israeli stamps) risked imprisonment. Now, thanks to warming rela- tions between Israel and Jordan, visits by Diaspora Jews could be just weeks away. And, according to a close ad- 14 viser to King Hussein, Israelis will be welcome as soon as the two countries sign a peace treaty, possibly within two years. Last week, David Clayman, Is- rael director of the American Jewish Congress, traveled here to explore the possrlity of bring- ing Diaspora Jewish tourists to e family will love. Throughout Mr. Clayman's three-day visit, key government officials and travel professionals expressed keen interest in open- ing their country to Jewish tourists, Israeli stamps and all, he said 4 One official, who spoke on con- dition of anonymity, assured Mr. Clayman that the "clean" pass- port rule "is not an explicit poli- cy," and noted that Jordan began to permit tourists with Israeli stamps to enter, albeit unoffi- cially, several months ago. Mr. Clayman, who had first visited Jordan in 1986 as a mem- ber of an AJCongress delegation invited by King Hussein, called last week's visit "very important" Since there are no communi- cation links between Israel and Jordan, the American Embassy in Amman served as intermedi- ary, facilitating a meeting be- tween Mr. Clayman and Mr. Adwan in Jerusalem in late March to discuss the feasibility . 10 of Jewish tourism to Jordan. For tourism to succeed, Mr. Clayman said, both sides must put aside their prejudices.
