acob Frank was a private
with the 1st Texas Infantry,
Louis Reitler was a
sergeant with the 32nd
New York Infantry. Both died in
the Civil War.
In Where They Lie (Univer-
sity Press of America), Mel Young
discusses the role Jews played in
the Civil War which, he says, was
much greater than is generally
perceived.
Mr. Young documents Jewish
fatalities in all the major Civil
War battles, tells where the men
are buried and considers the cir-
cumstances of their deaths.
An accountant in Chattanooga,
Tenn., Mr. Young said his inter-
est in the subject began about
14 years ago, when he read an old
article about a proposed
Civil War cemetery for Jewish
soldiers.
He researched numerous
books, archives and documents
for Where They Lie.
"It never ceased to amaze me
what would turn up," he told The
Atlanta Constitution. "I never
would have realized that there
were two Jewish officers in the
Confederate Navy."
