body, day schools are taking
on more responsibilities. Par-
ents are working longer hours.
There are more single par-
ents. Today, more than ever,
schools attempt to fulfill chil-
dren's personal as well as aca-
demic needs. Ms. Iczkovitz
expects this to continue.
"The school in many ways
has become more of a surro-
gate parent, surrogate family.
It provides a sense of securi-
ty," she said. "Not only are we
teaching them about reading,
writing, arithmetic and He-
brew, but also about sex, drugs
and conflict resolution."
In 2044, Ms. Iczkovitz en-
visions a few structural
changes to Hillel.
First of all, helicopters will
land on the roof of the school,
thus alleviating parking lot
congestion.
As for high-tech detention,
Ms. Iczkovitz hesitates: "I
don't want to zap anyone."
ill there be a Michi-
gan Miracle Mis-
sion in 2044? Jane
Sherman, who
coordinated last year's and is
coordinating next year's,
hopes so. But the self-de-
scribed optimist expects the
itinerary to take on a different
flavor.
"In 1993, 50

went as first-

timers. I would hope that 50
years from now everyone will
go to Israel as teen-agers and
young adults. I hope they
won't have to wait for a Michi-
gan Miracle Mission to see Is-
rael for the first time," she
said.
"As far as what they're go-
ing to see site-wise, I couldn't
tell you," she said. "They're go-
ing to see a country flourish-
ing, as any western society
should be. You'll be able to go
across the borders — though
maybe not as easily as we get
to Canada today. There will
peace."

WHAT'S NEW...

HAIR BY: Max Rieger

"We'll still be here."

Here at home, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit will continue to strive
for many of the same objec-
tives as today, said President
David Page.
"I don't think the commu-
nity will ever return to what
we saw 50 years ago, when
the interaction was literally
in the streets and on neigh-
bors' front porches. That was
a combination of wanting to
live together and having to
live together," he said. "I think
people will be free to live
where they want to."
With continuing
freedom comes the
everlasting quest
for continuity. Mr.
Page expects
Federation will
employ video-con-
ferencing and
other new tech-
nologies for out-
reach and
education. And
when popular
speakers come to
town — say Abba
Eban III — Mr.
Page forecasts fan-
tastic turnouts,
thoroughly covered,
of course, by The
Jewish News.
