Strong Staff,
Weak Knees

Id Dahuk, a 30-year-old Bedouin
from a village near Jericho,
doesn't believe in beds — and
that goes for beds in hospital in-
tensive care units as well. When
the tent dweller was injured in
a road accident and rushed to
Hadassah-Hebrew University
Medic21 Center with broken ribs,
breathing difficulties and a he-
morrhaging lung, he had enough
strength to insist he would not
lie in a bed. Dr. Marian Chap-
man and the staff had no alter-
native but to bend down and
treat him on a mattress placed
on the floor of the unit. Accord-
ing to Dr. Charles Sprung, head
of the respiratory intensive care
unit at Hadassah, Dahuk is in
stable condition; the knees of the
staff are sore. ❑

Anti-Racism
Legislation

/

Sydney, Australia (JTA) — Aus-
tralia's Prime Minister Paul
Keating has given the strongest
indication yet that his govern-
ment will introduce tough anti-
racism legislation before the end
of the year.
Addressing a conference of the
Zionist Federation of Australia,
Mr. Keating said his Labor gov-
ernment is "preparing totake a
further step to safeguard our
record of tolerance with the in-
troduction shortly of national leg-
. islation on racial vilification."
He noted that "some forms of
expression are sufficiently offen-
sive to be intolerable in a decent
society."
Mr. Keating identified Holo-
caust denial as "a suggestion"
which "fosters incipient racism
and, in the eyes of the Australian
community, is obnoxious.
"We are not interested in ele-
vating racists to the status of
martyrs," Mr. Keating added.
"But the vicious and reckless who
would attack individual groups
must be made to know that they
are assaulting the values of the
entire community and that there
is a price to pay."
Sen. Nick Bolkus, minister for
immigration and ethnic affairs,
agreed view that "the offenses are
of such magnitude and are so re-
pulsive that the criminal sanc-
tion is the most appropriate one."
This he said "is the view of the
international community."
Support, in principle, for the
legislation also came from the
deputy opposition leader, Peter
Costello. He said his Liberal Par-
ty believes "that those who incite
injury to people, or destruction of
property, on the grounds of race,
nationality or ethnic origin (or
any other basis) should be sub-
ject to prosecution.- [--j
