A patient meets Ezer Weizman.

srael's President Ezer Weiz-
man played host recently at
Beit Hanassi in Jerusalem, Is-
rael's White House, to 20
young cancer patients being
treated at the Children's Medical
Center of Israel (CMCI).
The children's trip from the
Medical Center in Petah Tikvah
to Israel's capital was arranged
by peace activist Abie Nathan at
the request of actress-writer Gila
Almagor, who works extensive-
ly with seriously ill children.The
youngsters, who ranged in age
from 8 to 17, are at varying
stages of treatment.
President Weizman and his
wife Reuma were clearly moved
by their young visitors. When he
turned the floor over to his guests
after some brief welcoming re-
marks, there was only one re-
quest: "Can we have our picture
taken with you?"
The president, who as a rule
is not overly fond of photogra-
phers, was exceptionally cooper-
ative, agreeing to pose for
individual and group shots. In
the more informal atmosphere
around the buffet table, curiosi-
ty overcame shyness and the
young visitors plied the president
with questions.
At the end of the visit, Mrs.
Weizman made arrangements to
visit the Medical Center to renew
her friendship with the young-

sters and to see for herself
CMCI's advanced facilities.
Following their meeting with
President Weizman, the young-
sters visited the Biblical Zoo and
the Western Wall, where they
were blessed by Rabbi Yehuda
Getz, rabbi of the Wall.
Dr. Ian Cohen, Deputy Direc-
tor of the Department of Hema-
tology-Oncology at CMCI, told
President Weizman that up-
wards of 150 new cases of chil-
dren with cancer are diagnosed
and treated each year at CMCI,
Israel's only critical care medical
institution for children. CMCI
treats 65 percent of all children
diagnosed with cancer in Is-
rael.The department, which is
equipped with highly specialized
diagnostic and research tools,
serves children with blood disor-
ders and malignancies on an in-
patient and out-patient basis.
Every effort is made to enable the
children to continue normal ac-
tivities throughout the course of
treatment, Dr. Cohen said.
The Children's Medical Cen-
ter serves all children in need —
regardless of race, religion or na-
tional origin — from Israel and
the region. It treats infants, chil-
dren and adolescents suffering
from the most serious and life-
threatening diseases and in-
juries.
