Jews expelled from the Warsaw Ghetto following the uprising.

he order came April 19,
1943.
Nazi officials were told
to send all Jews in the War-
saw Ghetto to the death camps
Treblinka and Auschwitz. Any-
one resisting was to be shot.
A few hundred Jews, most of
them teens, vowed to fight back.
Their weapons: pistols, Molotov
cocktails and a few light machine
guns.
Now Israel Gutman, a survivor
of the battle, tells the whole sto-
ry of the Warsaw Ghetto Upris-
ing in the new Resistance
(Houghton Mifflin Company).
Professor Gutman traces the
transformation of the peaceful
Warsaw Jewry to active resis-
tance and considers the validity
of such commonly held beliefs as:
Jews doubted reports of a "Final
Solution," and they waited too
long to defend themselves.
Among the incidents he
records is one involving fighter
Haim Frymer, who was stationed
at the corner of Zamenhof and
Mila streets, looking at the site
of the major battle in the ghet-
