New Photos Of Albert Einstein

I

wo recently discovered photographs of scien-
tist Albert Einstein, taken in Berlin in 1928,
have been presented to the Hebrew Universi-
ty of Jerusalem.
The photographs were donated to the Albert Ein-
stein Archives at the Jewish National and Uni-
versity Library of the Hebrew University by the
German state of Brandenburg.

Emil Orlik, a well-known German art nouveau
painter and designer who died in 1932, took the
photographs.
They show Mr. Einstein relaxing on a terrace of
a house five years before the Nazis came to yow-
er in Germany. Mr. Einstein was forced to-,emi-

t

n a recent survey of reli-
gions conducted by the dai-
ly newspaper Le Monde in
mace, 3 percent of the respon-
dents said they could be described
as Jews.
By extrapolation, this would
put the total number of French
Jews at 1.5 million, or about
three times the 530,000 estimat-

ed by demographers.
When asked to state their re-
ligion, 1 percent of the respon-
dents said they were Jewish,
which would correctly reflect
what's considered the actual size
of the Jewish community. No ex-
planation was offered for the dis-
crepancy.
