he little monocled restau-
rant critic seated in his tux,
logo of Stage & Co. on the
Boardwalk, may not be
smiling, but he's probably getting
a good laugh inside.
So long as people can speak,
there will be rumors ... In some
cases, the time worn old adage
about where there's smoke
there's fire might hold some wa-
ter.
But in many others, like the
most recent one regarding Stage
& Co. it couldn't be farther from
the truth.
False word spread that Jack
and Harriet Goldberg had sold
their fine delicatessen-restaurant
... and even that "an outside had
bought the place.
The kcal dining institution
started by Jack and Harriet al-
most 32 years ago in Oak Park,
instill a family affair where the
Goldberg household tradition of
their children helping out in var-
ious capacities still continues.
More recently, it was their
daughter, Sheila, managing day-
to-day operations ... After 20
years in the business, she decid-
ed to retire ... but not without an-
other family member to take
over.
This time it is Jack and Har-
riet's son, Steven, who used to
wash dishes for them when 7
years old, standing on a wooden
crate to reach the controls, then
bussing tables, cooking, working
carry-out, etc. ... The last 11
years, Steve has been practicing
law in California and is a famil-
iar face to those who have fre-
quented "The Stage" since those
Oak Park days on Nine Mile.
Steve has taken over the helm
at Stage & Co. ... with new inno-
vative cuisine ideas and menu
items that are being received
with much gusto ... Five more sal-
ads, six additional entrees, added
sandwiches like smoked white-
fish salad with cucumber, tomato
and onion, grilled yellowfin tuna
with grilled eggplant, onion and
tomato, and fresh mozzarella,
tomato and pesto.
He is back in the hometown
with new bride, Lisa ... and mak-
ing a lot of folks, including their
little critic, mighty happy in the
knowledge that a Goldberg is still
running the Stage & Co. show.
A RAGS TO riches story
couldn't be more true than that
of Harry Korman ... He was a rag
merchant when arriving here
from Russia, and today with wife
Ann, both Jewish Russian im-
migrants in their 80s, they can
dedicate their vast charitable

work to the fruits received from
a wonderful America.
One of Harry and Ann's pet
charities is Michigan Cancer
Foundation Partners whose black
tie party is July 23 at Somerset
Collection in Troy ... and its golf
classic July 25 at the fine TPC
course in Dearborn.
Proceeds from the two events
benefit the Suzanne Korman
Morton Cancer Research Fund,
the MCF Hospice and an en-
dowment fund for future dona-
tions ... The SKY! Cancer
Research Fund was founded by
Harry and Ann after the death of
their 36-year-old daughter
Suzanne.
Overall co-chairpersons of the
two events are Vicki Fingeroot,
Harry and Ann's granddaughter,
and Ed Wizner ... For more info,
call Vicki, 358-4080, or her cousin
Patty Klein, 358-4875.
ONE OF THE most popular
items at Big Daddy's
Parthenon, Orchard
Lake Road, north of
Maple, is not on the
lunch or dinner
menu ...It's co-

. . .

shocker is that according to its
meat purveyor, Big Daddy's
Parthenon, with over 1500
pounds of top grade lamb chops,
sells more per week than the en-
tire Greektown on Monroe ... An
amazing stat!
Its outdoor patio, by the way,
is open with seating for around
60.
News about Big Daddy's sister
restaurant to come, Big Mama's
Italian-Casa, at the former site of
Buster's Bay on Orchard Lake
Rd. and Pontiac Trail, is that the
place should be about ready for
opening in about five weeks ...
Tom and Barry Rogow, Rick's
brother, will host the operation.
WHERE THEYARE Dept. ...
Pianist Joel Nash ... one of the top
favorites around here in yester-
years ... is at the piano bar of
Scalini's Italian Restaurant in
Del Mar, San Diego.
CONGRATS ... to Harry and
Clara Lechner ... on their
50th anniversary ... cele-
brated with a dinner par-
ty at Russian Bear in
Orchard Mall on Orchard
Lake Road ... given by
their daughter, Tamara,
and son-in-law, Eugene
Friedman ... They came
here from Russia about
16 years ago and never
have many people seen so
much love as that of Har-
ry and Clara and their
family.

The
lovely
couple
enjoyed a
lot of
dancing at

Bear, folks

put on, and back in it goes.

Big Daddy's is now a whopping plant, sliced tomatoes with feta

used a week ... But the biggest potato stuffed with vegetables,
