EASY HOME-
COOLING

While a cool, refreshing decor can
take the edge off a hot day, some-
times it's just not enough.
In climates where summer days
really cook up, air conditioning is the
most efficient way to beat the heat.
Options include systems that cool
the whole house to small window-
mounted units to cool a particular
room.
Because air conditioning can, like
heating during the cold-weather
months, get expensive, try to pick
the system that's most efficient for
your needs. If, for instance, you just
need to cool off the family room or
bedroom during the few weeks of the
year that it's really hot, opt fora small
room air conditioner. Just make sure
that its efficient enough to cool the
space you need.
Also, don't set the temperature so
low that the room feels like a meat
locker. A higher temperature setting
means lower electricity bills. Also
make sure outside doors and win-
dows are shut so the air condition-
er doesn't have to work harder.
Ceiling fans are a stylish, tropical
home-cooling solution; and they
come in a variety of styles to fit into
any decor. Mount them in well-traf-
ficked areas to keep air circulating.
use them alone or in tandem with an
air-conditioning unit (in cold weath-
er months, changing the direction
the blades rotate makes a ceiling fan
boost the efficiency of a heater.)
Augment your cooling system
with fans, which also come in a vari-
ety of sizes.
If the house is hot first thing in the
morning or when you come home
from work, put air conditioners
and/or fans on a timer to cool the air
before you wake up or return home.
For natural, nonelectric cooling
solutions, mount awnings over the
windows that get a lot of direct sun.
Another long-term answer is to plant
shade trees next to the house to
shield it from the hot afternoon sun.
