The case to fund the school is compelling, while the stated reasons for denying that support are problematic .. . Although limitations in fund- ing were highlighted as the rea- son for the lack of support to Darchei Torah, it was clear from the May 27 Jewish News article that the Federation found the whole idea of another Orthodox day school troublesome. The con- cept that the "Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and Darchei Torah compete for students" seemed to be the strongest detractor to Darchei Torah's chances for ben- eficiary status. In fact, Mr. Ziffer stated -that "There's no question that if we had a better Allied Jewish Campaign, the idea of two ben- eficiaries occupying a similar area would remain an issue." The Federation, in fact, has a history of offering educational choices to parents in our com- munity. The United Hebrew Schools operated out of several locations for years. It was un- derstood that for any number of reasons, one family might prefer Beth Achim, while another felt more comfortable with the out- look and atmosphere at Beth Moses (now Beth Abraham Hillel Moses), even though those insti- tutions could not be easily cate- gorized into markedly differing philosophies.
