Jerry's USA representative to the
successful chain of 11 shops that
has spread across Israel over the
past five years.
Despite the fact that their ice
cream is thriving in Israel, neither
of the famous duo, Ben Cohen and
Jerry Greenfield, has gotten
around to viewing the stores in
their Jewish homeland. Mr. Fur-
man vehemently denied the sug-
gestion that it is fear of security
that has kept them from coming.
"No, no, no, no," he said, "that's
the furthest thing from the
truth."
Mr. Cohen, who has been Fur-
man's friend for over 20 years, is
simply too busy running his busi-
ness, trying to save the world
through social activism, and giv-
ing speeches.
"The guy is very booked. I
think that in order to get him
here, I'd have to take out his ap-
pointment book, flip to a few
months ahead and write "IS-
RAEL" across one of the weeks,"
said Mr. Furman.
Despite the fact that Ben &
Jerry's was founded and is still
operated by a group of self-de-
scribed nice Jewish boys, the idea
of bringing the super-rich, super-
delicious and super-fattening ice
cream to the Jewish state was not
their own.
The managing director of Ben
& Jerry's in Israel, Avi Zinger, 41,
had enjoyed the specialty ice
cream at Ben & Jerry's Vermont
headquarters on ski trips.
Before the ice cream became a
sensation in large United States
cities, Mr. Zinger had already
talked the owners into letting him
open a branch of the chain in Is-
rael, convinced that it would be
a hit.
Judging by the success of Ben
& Jerry's favorites like "Che
Garcia" (chocolate chunks and
cherries in vanilla ice cream) and
"Chunky Monkey" (chunks of ba-
nana and chocolate in banana ice
cream), he was right.
Mr. Furman and Mr. Zinger
sat together and compared notes
on the art of ice-cream making,
discussing such problems as the
difficulty of keeping the temper-
ature constant after the product
leaves the factory and hits the
grocery store. Mr. Zinger urged
Mr. Furman to try flavors unique
to Israel, such as the popular can-
dy bar Pesek Zman.
"When I called (Pesek Zman
manufacturer) Elite and told
them I wanted cases of their can-
dy bars because I wanted to
crumble them into ice cream,
they thought I was crazy," Mr.
Zinger told Mr. Furman.
In the course of their conver-
sation, the two men discovered
that they have separately at-
tempted unsuccessful experi-
ments with matzah ice cream for
Passover.
"Too soggy," Mr. Furman said
sadly.
