RABBI YERACHMIEL RABIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

T

his week's Torah portion,
Parshat Shelach, recounts
the episode of the 12 spies
who were sent to the land
of Israel and the sad ending of
this event. The Jewish people had
been journeying in the desert for
about 14 months and were get-
ting close to Israel. Moshe
Rabbeinu announced, "In a few
days we will enter Israel." Many
of the people were happy to hear
this, but some were afraid. This
fear showed God that they lacked
perfect faith in Him.
As a result of their fear, the
people approached Moshe, ask-
ing him to send spies to spy out
the land. They claimed that this
would help them in conquering
the land by knowing their oppo-
sition and assessing the best
route into the land. Moshe did not
like the idea, but since the peo-
ple were pressing him, he asked
God's permission. God said, "I
don't like their plan, but if they
want to carry it out, let them."
Moshe chose very righteous men,
one from each tribe, to be spies.
He told them exactly what to look
for and where to enter the land.
The spies were gone for 40
days. Upon their return, they re-
ported their findings to the peo-
ple. This was on the eve of the
ninth of Av, which has echoed of
tragedy throughout Jewish his-
tory, the most well known events
was the destruction of both tem-
ples. The spies announced to the
Jewish people that the land is un-
conquerable because the people
that dwell in it are fierce and the
cities are fortified.
Although two of the spies,
Yehoshua and Calev, were true
to their mission and brought back
a positive report, the majority of
the people believed the evil report
of the spies and concluded that
the nations are too mighty for
them to conquer.
God was very disappointed at
the lack of faith displayed by His
nation. After all, He had per-
formed so many miracles for
them and protected them since
the exodus from Egypt. Why
didn't they trust in God now?
In addition, how could the
spies have reduced the people to
such a discouraged state? These
people had witnessed the 10
plagues, the splitting of the Red
Sea, the heavenly cloud that pro-
tected them in the desert, the
manna which fell from heaven
daily, and the well which trav-
eled with them, among many oth-

er miracles. Besides, the spies
themselves were very righteous
men of their tribes. How could
they have erred and brought
themselves, and the Jews, to such
a bitter end?
We need to understand that
the spies did not have anxiety or
fear on a physical level. It was
spiritual anxiety. In the desert,
God had provided everything for
them. The spies feared that en-
tering the land of Israel and hav-
ing to work the land and deal
with the mundane activities,
would leave little time for the ser-
vice of God.
They felt spirituality flourish-
es in a secluded atmosphere,
where there is a total dedication
to holy matters. But the were
making a mistake in a funda-
mental concept.

meating the physical realm with

holiness. The goal of every mitz-
vah is to make a dwelling place
for God in this world. The mira-
cles that were experienced in the
desert were not the height of spir-
ituality. They were a preparation
for the real job of going into the
land and making it holy.
The spies separated the spiri-
tual from the material, and this
was their error. We can learn a
great lesson from this Torah por-
tion. Every day we experience
two divisions — spiritual and
physical. A Jew begins his day
with prayer and learning. Then
he must "enter the land," which
is the world of business and liveli-
hood, where he feels no religious
connection.
Perhaps his work consumes
his mind so much that even while
praying and learning, his worries
invade his mind and distract him
from spirituality. We must not
make the error of the spies.
God is present in all that we
do, and each moment of the day
is an opportunity for us to bring
God into our lives and bring ho-
liness into this world by con-
ducting all our business dealings
and daily activities in the way the
Torah commands. This prepares
the world for the ultimate goal
which is the coming of Moshiach.
May he come speedily in our
days. 111
