John Weidner

Los Angeles (JTA) — John Wei-
dner, 81, one of the most daring,
Christian rescuers of Jews dur-
ing the Holocaust, died May 21
at his home in Los Angeles sub-
urb.
The Dutch-born son of a Sev-
enth-Day Adventist minister, Mr.
Weidner founded in 1942 the so-
called Dutch-Paris Line, which
operated escape routes from
Nazi-occupied Holland, Belgium
and France into neutral Switzer-
land.
The underground network is
credited with saving more than
800 Jews, 80 Allied airmen and
scores of Catholic priests and po-
litical refugees.
With 5-million-franc price on
his head, Mr. Weidner was cap-
tured three time by the Gestapo
and French secret police, tor-
tured, and interrogated by Klaus
Barbie,11-1 infamous "Butcher of
Lyon."
He escaped each time, jump-
ing off trains, swimming the Rine
River under Nazi fire, and once
diving through a third-floor
prison window, just before his
scheduled execution.
He has been honored as a
Righteous Gentile by Yad
Vashem in Jerusalem and deco-
rated by the governments of
Britain, the United States, Hol-
land, France and Belgium. Mr.
Weidner was one of seven per-
sons chosen to light candles at the
opening last year of the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington. D
