stores sell Peace Pops ice cream
bars covered with chocolate and
wrapped in paper bearing peace
slogans.
Mr. Furman runs a store in
Ithaca, N.Y., where he lives, that
is a combination business/social
program designed to give troubled
youth a model of entrepreneur-
ship.
Similar efforts have been
launched in the Israeli chain. "I
feel that if I am representing the
company in terms of the quality
of the ice cream, I also have to rep-
resent the philosophy of the com-
pany," Mr. Zinger said.
Mr. Zinger's projects have in-
cluded creating a special dispos-
al center for batteries to help save
the environment; collecting toys
for Ethiopian and Russian immi-
grant children; and programs
benefiting battered children and
children with learning disabili-
ties.
In the coming months, Mr.
Zinger is planning to launch a
program modeled on one in the
United States. It will use ice
cream to encourage blood dona-
tions, cleverly promoted as "Give
a pint, get a pint."

"I'd much rather be
in the ice cream
business."

Jeffrey Furman

Mr. Zinger went to the Unit-
ed States at age 22 after serving
in the EDF. He stayed there for 13
years. In 1986, he became con-
vinced that the special ice cream
he enjoyed in Vermont would be
the right vehicle to bring him
back to Israel.
Mr. Zinger and his then-part-
ner, Nahum Gendleman, went to
Vermont and spent the day with
Ben Cohen. After winning him
over, Mr. Zinger was sent to Mr.
Furman in Ithaca to be inspect-
ed and was ultimately the first
person outside the company au-
thorized to open an overseas Ben
& Jerry's branch.
The only other Ben & Jerry's
stores existing outside the Unit-
ed States are in Russia, where the
company opened as a political
statement — back when Russia
was part of the former Soviet
Union and doing business there
was a daring act.
After the agreement was fi-
nalized, Mr. Zinger came to Israel
and began a long process of look-
ing for suppliers, acquiring per-
mits to import ingredients, and
then trying to reproduce the ice
cream's quality here.
When it came time for Mr.
Zinger to bring samples back to
Vermont for executive approval,
he packed the ice cream in dry ice
and smuggled it into the United
States, skirting very strict Amer-
ican regulations against bringing

in foodstuffs.
The 11 Israeli Ben & Jerry's
stores are located in Tel Aviv
(three), Jerusalem (three),
Ra'anana, Rishon Lezion, Eilat
by the Dead Sea and in Yavne,
where the manufacturing plant
is located.
Mr. Zinger says proudly that
his product is in demand at Unit-
ed States Embassy functions, and
that former ambassador William
Brown was particularly fond of
his ice cream.
In an attempt to hook new am-
bassador Edward Djerejian, the
company sent him several pints
when he first arrived to make him
feel at home. 0

More French
Business?

The Confederation of French In-
dustries and Services (CNPF) and
the Manufacturers Association of
Israel has signed a joint state-
ment of cooperation.
The CNPF represents 1.5 mil-
lion French companies. The group
hopes to convince member firms
to conduct business with Israel
and make the Israel market a
part of their international strat-
egy.
The agreement concentrates
on mutual investment, promotion
and economic relations between
the two countries. One aspect of
the accord is the granting of mu-
tual assistance to visiting busi-
ness people from each country.
Currently, France is Israel's
eighth most active trading part-
ner. However, CNPF President
Francois Perigot sees no reason
why his country should not be
among the top three.
According to Mr. Perigot, po-
tential areas for cooperation be-
tween the two countries include
infrastructure, telecommunica-
tions, energy, tourism and scien-
tific and technological research0
