basically guaranteed a job after
college," said Steven Gerenraich,
a 26-year-old University of Illi-
nois law-school student and
Farmington Hills native. "Now a
college degree means the same
as a high school degree."
His father, Jerry Gerenraich,
a dentist whose practice is in
Sterling Heights, agrees.
"The opportunity to get ahead
is more limited now, " Dr. Geren-
raich said. "Economic mobility is
more difficult with inflation and
the cost of living. It's hard to get
ahead."
As young adults try to excel in
their careers, they tend to delay
marriage. In the 1960s, on the
average, men were getting
married at 22 and women at 20,
according to statistics from the
Census Bureau. In 1992, average
ages were significantly higher.
Men were 26 and women were
24.
"When my dad was my age, he
was in dental school and getting
married," Mr. Gerenraich said. "I
have no plans on getting married
any time soon."
Ms. Goodman has a theory.
She believes adolescence now
lasts until the age of 30.
"We are supported by our par-
ents for much longer," she said.
"To do all the things I have done
I needed my parents' help. We
are not adults in the same way
my mom was at my age. It is not

necessarily a bad thing. Today we
have more choices. When my
mom was 30, she had two kids.
My life will just be beginning at
30. On the downside, my parents
should enjoy middle age. Instead,
they are going to have to worry
about a wedding and postpone
their retirement.
"Everyone puts down our gen-
eration. Some people don't
understand why we go to school
for so long or they wonder why
we travel. We are expanding our
minds. Why rush, since we are
not guaranteed a job."
After graduating from the Uni-
versity of Michigan, Mr. Geren-
raich wanted to go overseas. So
he moved to Taiwan.
"I went there not knowing
what I wanted to do and not
wanting to go back to school right
away," he said. "After six months
I took a job with Chrysler for 3
1/2 years. This is not the norm
among my friends, but I know a
few people who have spent time
overseas. The first time my dad
was on a plane may have been
during his time in the service. I
