I read with interest your article
of April 15, "Watch and Worry."
It is a good article but, I think,
contains some mistakes. You
write that some 80-90 percent of
South Africa's 90,000-105,000
Jews live in Johannesburg. That
is impossible. At least 20,000 live
in and around Cape Town and
10,000 others live in Durban,
Pretoria, Bloemfontin and East
London.

You write that Mandela was
charged with treason and con-
victed. The 1963 trial was on
charges of sabotage, terrorism
and conspiracy.

with encouraging the rich guys
to keep their money in their
home community.
There's no shame in being poor
or less wealthy than your neigh-
bors and wanting to participate.
But before you choose to com-
plain, make sure you've partici-
pated in some way.
The shame is that we're letting
egos and misperceptions rule.
Stop this bickering and work it
out. Find a way to live with de-
cisions and with the people who
are your leaders. Change your at-
titudes.
In times of crisis in the histo-
ry of this community — be it the
Butzels or the Fishers or the Her-
melins — we have been fortunate
that wealthy Jews realized what
they had to do.

We're spending too much time
making an issue of dollars and
the "haves" and "have-nots." Con-
tinue this divisiveness and those
who can give will trade in the
headaches and go elsewhere.
You call this simplistic think-
ing? Then take all your philo-
sophical thoughts, abstract
theories and try to trade them in
for a new textbook.
Schools and other Jewish in-
stitutions need money; they need
the wealthy. There isn't a devel-
opment director alive who
wouldn't tell us how important it
is to have a core of anchor, big
givers. Do they listen to these
people? You bet they do. Are they
on the boards and do they hold
high offices? Without question.
They should be.
