Furniture Show
At Mesa Arts

From June 9 through 11, Taos,
N.M., furniture designer Teresa
Swayne will be at Mesa Arts to
introduce "Authenticity and El-
egance," a show devoted to Ms.
Swayne's original furniture de-
signs.
Taos' tradition in furniture and
folk art, which reflects several
centuries of blending three dif-

Chlmayo-style table

ferent cultures: Anglo, Mexican
and Native American, is home to
an impressive number of highly
skilled artists and craftpersons.
Teresa Swayne designs in the
Chimayo and New Mexico An-
tique Style. The Chimayo pieces
are reminiscent of Shaker de-
signs, hand-crafted of pine or
alder, using mortise and tenon
joinery, dovetail joins in the draw-
ers, and hand finished with a
stain or painted and distressed
and rubbed with several coats of
wax to a silky patina. Because of
their simplicity, tables, chairs and
bedstands in the Chimayo style
adapt to any decor.
The iron work, both stands and
pulls, are handforged in Taos,
and the copper and tin panels fea-
tured in many of the Antique
New Mexico designs are
punched, patinaed, and hand-
painted. The decorative painted
or punched tin, distressed or
painted finishes on the antique
styled furnishings look comfort-
able with contemporary or tradi-
tional homes.
The show will continue
through June 30. Mesa Arts is at
32800 Franklin Rd. in the Village
of Franklin. For information, call
851-9949.
