Bass Company Williamston, MI At LuLu's Lingerie We Have Your Size! Prior to July, 1993, deaf people could only make use of telephone services by virtue of a TDD machine. This device electronically sends typewritten messages through the phone lines which can be received by others equipped with TDD machines. In the past, because both par- ties needed TDD machines to communicate over the phones successfully, the deaf per- sons' range of phoning options was limited. Now, the Americans with Disabilities Act re- quires phone companies to provide a hear- ing relay operator to speak to any party with whom a deaf person wishes to talk. This new nationwide relay service means that the deaf can phone TDD-equipped operators who can set up three-way conference calls with anyone in the country, even though the ones receiving the call do not have a TDD machine. • Fills - VP • Manicures -'10°° •Full Set with_ Tips - silOrm • Full Set - W-iu" ASK FO R Elena Feinberg NAIL ART SPECIALIST Call today for an appointment' OPEN 7 DAYS Always Summer THIS WEEK ONLY... A couple may not re- marry in Jewish law until after a Get. At the same time we would like to point out, that only a Get from an Orthodox Rabbinical Court is assured of universal acceptance. DAVID SKLAR, ASID You can arrange to have a Get by calling our office at: SUGARTREE PLAZA (810) 559-5005 Orchard Lake Road at Maple 810-626-1999 So enthusiastic is Mr. Szur- miej about Yiddish culture that he has been trying to start Yid- dish theater groups in Moscow, Kiev and Vilnius. Indeed, despite the fact that the troupe performs in a language few understand, Mr. Szurmiej is confident about the future. "We've played all over the world except in China and Japan, and 90 percent of our au- dience here are Polish youth." In the past several years, the theater's repertoire has consist- ed of musical shows such as The Troubadours of Galicia, a revue based on the work of Mordechai Gebirtig, If I Were a Rich Man, the theater's own musical version of Tevye the Milkman (but using for the most part Jerry Bock's — of Fiddler On The Roof fame — score), and Bonjour Monsieur Chagall, a musical celebration of Chagall's life. The only non- musical was Us Polish Jews, a tribute to the work of the Jewish poet Juliun Tuwim. Despite, or maybe because of Mr. Szurmiej's efforts, the the- ater really seems to have become essentially a sort of exotic curi- osity shop or a museum — a place that, thanks to the actors, comes to life now and then. It also appears to be one way the Polish government can ward off accu- sations of alleged Polish anti- Semitism. One of the retired Jewish ac- tors has his own view of the the- ater at present, believing it to have changed irrevocably over the last 20 or so years — and becoming somewhat unnatural in the process. "They may try hard, aber men hakt holtz (It's like chopping wood)." Mr. Szurmiej is more opti- mistic. "People said we wouldn't last this long, but we've been work- ing fine for 50 years and we are living," he says. "That's what's important." 17071 West 10 Mile Road • Smithfield, Ml 48075 Ceremony Marks Rescue Paris (JTA) — At a ceremony here commemorating the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during World War II, the president of Bulgaria said he hopes for a Europe in which xenophobia and anti- Semitism will cease to exist. "I hope that a free and united Europe, East and West, will be declared a zone where xenophobia and anti- Semitism will not be tolerated," Bulgarian Presi- dent Zheliu Zhelev said at the ceremony.
