Budapest (JTA) — Police arrest-
ed two Hungarian neo-Nazi lead-
ers here over the weekend after
raiding their apartments and
confiscating swastikas and neo-
fascist literature.
In raids, police arrested Albert
Szabo and Istvan Gyorkos, both
described as neo-Nazi leaders.
Gyorkos was head of a recently
founded neo-Nazi organization,
the Hungarian Movement of
Radical Nationalists.
Mr. Szabo recently returned to
Hungary from Australia. He re-
portedly fled Hungary when the
country was under Communist
rule.
In reports comparing him to
Russian ultranationalist Vladi-
mir Zhirinovsky — who recently
denounced reports that he is half-
Jewish — Mr. Szabo, too, has
been described as being of Jew-
ish descent.
According to local reports, Mr.
Szabo was said to have traveled
first to Israel when he fled Hun-
gary.
But Hungarian ultranational-.
ist Istvan Csurka, who in the past
has made a series of public anti-
Semitic statements, said the re-
ports of Mr. Szabo's Jewish roots
were a complete fabrication,
which he described as "a Zionist
plot" to discredit the Hungarian
neo-Nazi movement.
When local police arrested the
two, they seized from their apart-
ments neo-Nazi literature and
hundred of stickers bearing
swastikas, which cannot be pub-
licly displayed under Hungarian
law.
The two men have declared
themselves successors to the
World War II fascist Arrow Cross
leader, Ferenc Szalasi, a Nazi col-
laborator.
